Brass Rubbing Workshop - 25 January

'Today, two women came in to our school to do brass rubbing with the children in Years 3-6. The first thing that happened was that we got told more about the brasses and the fact brasses were metal sheets that were put on top of tombs and that on top of the brasses the picture of the people inside the tombs were carved on top of the brass. We then got shown some of the pictures of some of the rubbed brasses. The first few brasses that we saw were brasses of people in the medieval times then we moved on to people in the Tudor times and then the people in the Victorian times.

After we found out all of this we had to do our own brass rubbings, we got told that we had to push down the gaps in our sheet of paper and then draw round the outside with a wax crayon and card so that we don’t go over the edges, the brass I rubbed was an ox and I did it in gold, I found it a bit hard at first but afterwards I began to find it easier. I thought the brass rubbing was really fun and I would like to do it again.'

'Today, Years 3-6 took part in an activity called Brass Rubbing where we learned what medieval people, Tudors and Victorians wore in those days.  The pictures that they showed us were actually real Brass Rubbings that they had completed and rubbed over real tombs in churches such as Westminster Abbey and many more.  They used wax to shade over the brass tombs to show up the parts were the brass lifted to create an outline of the figure.

After that they gave us a chance to try out our own Brass Rubbings.  There were lots of different Brass rubbing, no two twere he same.  There were rubbings of knights, griffins, angels and one elephant.  We each chose a coloured wax, wrapped our brass picture in black paper and started to feel the outside of brass and used the wax to draw a line following the curve of it.  After that we used polish to make our finished pictures look stunning!

When everyone had completed their Brass Rubbings and tidied up, Mr Pressling mounted them and hung them up on the wall for display!'
