Year 4 - St John's Church - 25 May
In R.E. in Year 4 we have been learning about churches.
'Today, we went to St. John’s church to look at all of the things there. Firstly, Mrs Farrell gave us a clipboard with one piece of paper for us to do some work on it. She put us into three groups and I was in Mrs Elsley group, with some other of my friends.
Next Father Stephen and Reverend Sue talked to us about the church and told us about the stained glass windows, the altar, and lots of other things as well. (Father Stephen and Reverend Sue are the people who look after St John’s church).
Next, our group went up into the organ loft where there were steep steps; it was very dark when we got up to the organ. There were three piano keyboards which were all the same size and there were also lots of pedals at the bottom of the organ for playing other notes.
Next we looked around the church in the Nave and the Chancel. We looked at a lot of things in the Nave like the Font and we saw a very big Bible on the lectern. After looking in the Nave and the Chancel we went to the tower to look at the Belfry where the bells are rung. All of my friends that have been in there, said “it was very scary and creepy”.
We had to go up the steep steps again, and when we reached halfway, we looked at the ropes that pull the bells. They had little cushion things around them and rope at the bottom of them. After looking halfway we went even higher to see the actual bells. There were six of them! They were really, really big. Then we went back down the stairs. There were cobwebs on the ceiling and so my friends were right – it was creepy and scary, but I thought it would be even scarier, so I was lucky! After looking at the Belfry we had to do our worksheet on which we had to draw three things that we had seen and write about them. I did chose the Font, the Bible and the beautiful stained glass windows.
After that we went back to school. I had a great time at the church and my favourite part was looking at the bells in the Belfry.'
