Year 6 - Court Workshop - 22 November

'Today, Mrs Marnham came to school to teach us about the law and what happens in court.  Mrs Marnham told us that there were two types of legal representatives in court.  They are solicitiors and barristers.  The difference between then is that a solicitor gives legal advice and offers legal services and a barrister gives specialist legal advice and will represent you in court.  Then Mr Pressling selected parts for us.  In court there are two sides adn each side has a barrister who talks to the court and judge.  The barrister puts forward a case adn tries to win the case in your favour.  Some of us had to help and advise the pretend barrister before the court case started.  When a witness was called to the witness box they swear an oath on the bible or make an affirmation that they will tell the truth.  My favourite part was being told that our side had won.  I enjoyed this very much and  hope that I can do this again.'

'Mrs Marnham came into school for our PSCHE lesson to talk about what it is like in court, she is a barrister.  She was talking about all the different types of Courts and how they work.  We did a role play as Mrs Marnham brought in some props, some wigs and two black gowns, which helped us to see what people wore in Court and what it would be like.  The role play was about a boy called Danny and how he had been hit in the eye with a rock.  The barristers asked the defendant lots of questions about who had thrown the rock to try to get to the truth.  The witnesses gave their account of the story.  The boy who was hurt also took to the witness box.  The Jury listened to both sides and decided that the defendant was guilty and so the injured boy won his case.'
