What is the most rewarding part of your role?

The most rewarding part of my role is observing how much the children progress. Children absorb so much information and it always amazes me how many new skills they have acquired by the end of the school year. I feel proud that I have been a part of this process and contributed to their learning.

What has been your favourite West Lodge memory so far?

My favourite West Lodge memory is introducing Numicon, a learning tool that allows children to explore maths using structured imagery and apparatus. This created a light bulb moment for a child with dyscalculia, helping them to see connections between numbers and explore and understand mathematical concepts. It is wonderful to see how identifying a child’s preferred learning style can be the key to unlocking progress.

Why do you think West Lodge School is a special place to learn?

The community feel of West Lodge makes it a special place to learn. The small size of the school enables children to receive individual attention from the dedicated staff. This allows them to receive a personal touch and their individual talents can be developed with the correct balance of support and challenge. The staff know each and every one of the children by name and the learning environment is very warm and inclusive.

What is a typical day for you?

A typical day for me involves providing learning support for children reinforcing the skills they need to achieve their learning goals. This may include interventions with small groups of children to consolidate their learning, assist those with learning difficulties, or to challenge the high ability pupils. I prepare the classroom for lessons, create colourful displays and aim to keep it tidy!
